Written By: - Jul• 23•11

In a phased, three-year approach to reduce the environmental impact of its 20,000-square-foot data center, Enterhost is replacing its cooling system with the most energy-efficient, advanced data center air conditioning system available by Data Aire, Inc.

As the backbone of information technology, data centers contain the servers and storage systems needed to provide infrastructure technology solutions to businesses and other organizations. But the downside is this equipment consumes a great deal of power. The EPA estimates that national energy consumption by servers and data centers could reach more than 100 billion kWh this year, representing a $7.4 billion annual electricity cost.

That is why Enterhost is replacing its equipment with the new gForce by Data Aire, which uses environmentally friendly, non-ozone depleting refrigerants and energy-efficient fans and cooling coils. The energy savings are expected to be up to 40 percent. The gForce line is compliant with the standards recommended by the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

Additionally, Enterhost has reengineered its data center to offer advanced virtualization technologies and cloud computing solutions that can reduce the number of physical servers required without sacrificing storage capacity and other key requirements.

“Our energy-saving initiatives have allowed us to make improvements to our data center and NOC, resulting in conserving resources. We are committed to reducing our power consumption and passing these savings on to our clients,” said Carissa Cotner, Enterhost’s spokesperson.

Enterhost’s expansive data center in downtown Fort Worth contains 300 tons of total cooling capacity. To date Enterhost has replaced one-third of its capacity with Data Aire’s gForce units. The entire green upgrade will be completed over a three year period.

web hosting news :The Web Hosting Team Adds .mobi Domains

Written By: - Jul• 23•11

The Web Hosting Team has recently announced the addition of .mobi domains to its range of products. .mobi domains are intended to be used to with web sites designed for mobile devices such as smartphones.

While .mobi domain names have been available since 2006, The Web Hosting Team has only made the decision to promote .mobi domains recently. The increase in small data-capable devices over the past few years has resulted in many businesses redesigning their sites or creating totally new web sites for these devices.

“With so many people carrying smartphones and tablets these days, business owners are realising the importance of targeting these customers,” explained Simon Drain, CEO of The Web Hosting Team. “Many business owners and webmasters have created versions of their web sites that look fantastic on a smartphone. The website owner will often have a .com domain that they use with their main web site, and will buy the .mobi version of the domain to use with their new mobile-focused web site.”

Simon Drain states that as .mobi domains become more common, smartphone and tablet users will associate the domains with basic, well designed web sites that look great on their devices. “We think that the time is right to make .mobi domains available to our customers,” said Simon Drain, “as smartphone users now make up a significant proportion of the population.”

.mobi domains are available through The Web Hosting Team for $19.99. Further information is available at http://www.thewebhostingteam.com

web hosting india : Severity of Data Breaches Exposed

Credit card details are as openly available as a pair of shoes on the internet, leaving consumers open to serious fraud and businesses at risk of costly legal action.

A recent investigation by internet hosting specialist UKFast found that relatively simple Google searches reveal valuable collections of personal IDs.

One of the many databases found through a simple Google search by UKFast’s security experts flaunts 1,800 valid credit card details processed by an American takeaway, along with names, expiry dates and csc codes. The information is so specific it even provides the distance from the card owners’ homes to the takeaway.

Lawrence Jones, MD of UKFast explains: “Criminals are not just selling single card details; they are selling whole identities online, it is a big business right now. There are many sites that sell personal information as openly as you would sell a pair of shoes.”

Jones suggests businesses are putting themselves, as well as customers, at risk by not properly protecting data. UKFast’s security division monitors security and regularly carries out penetration tests that simulate hack attacks on servers to find any weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. But many companies are oblivious to the fact that storing card and personal details live on a web-server leaves them searchable by Google.

He said: “Businesses are unaware that in risking customer data they may also be breaking the law. Storing confidential information unencrypted, hosting with a foreign provider or hosting with cloud services without knowing where data is stored or how securely it is stored can all contravene the Data Protection Act.”

Jones advised internet shoppers on how to protect themselves. “We need to make it as difficult as possible for fraudsters to find out any extra information about us,” he said.

“Hobbies and relatives’ names act as password clues for many of us yet we still have this information all over social network sites. Having high privacy settings controls who has access to this information. Simple things like having stronger passwords and secure WiFi networks can make all of the difference.”

Personal details including date of birth, mother’s maiden name, workplace and marital status are available through Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter profiles. Hackers can use these sites to fill gaps in information and steal whole identities that hold a high value in the cybercrime community.

Neil Lathwood, IT director at UKFast says: “Google is very good at indexing, so any indexable back-up files stored on the server, may not be linked to from the website but can still be found through Google and anyone, even without advanced technical skills, is able to find it.”

“One of the best ways to test security is to hack your own site and search for the confidential data, this highlights areas you can strengthen to protect customer data,” he explains.

“The key is not to have your back up files stored unencrypted and live on the server – this is the most common security failure that I see, and to be honest, it is just lazy. Along with this companies need to check their servers have the best protection possible.”

web Hosting world News : Internet Companies IPO 2011

Written By: - Jul• 22•11

Some analysts fear investors who have forgotten history are doomed to repeat it when it comes to Internet IPOs.

Just 11 years after the dot-com bust, one of the biggest periods of wealth destruction ever on Wall Street, investors are paying rich prices for newly minted Internet stocks again.

The renewed furor was clear Wednesday, when real estate website Zillow jumped 79% in its first day of trading. That’s the latest sign of investors’ growing eagerness to get a piece of new Internet companies, including:

Escalating valuations for recent IPOs. Investors are paying $135 for each $1 in profit earned by home rental service HomeAway, and more than $1,000 for each $1 in profit at professional networking service LinkedIn, says Standard & Poor’s Capital IQ. In Zillow’s case, the company isn’t even turning a profit.

Surging prices for companies yet to go public. Facebook isn’t expected to go public until at least next year, yet on private markets, the company commands a value of $82.4 billion, according to SharesPost. That exceeds the value of Disney at $74 billion.

Rising supply of Internet stocks. So far, 25 of the year’s 79 IPOs are technology firms, IPOScoop says. And 14 of those tech IPOs are Internet companies with more to come, including coupon site Groupon later this year, Renaissance Capital says.

Investors “don’t look at rational valuation metrics,” says Francis Gaskins of IPOdesktop.com.

The same thing happened in the tech bubble. Among 10 of the most high-profile Internet IPOs from the sizzling 1998-to-2000 period, none made money for investors, and some produced massive losses, My Private Banking says. For instance, shares of social-networking pioneer TheGlobe are down 99% from their IPO.

Some experts say the mania hasn’t reached 2000 levels yet. This year’s 14 Internet IPOs pale next to the 272 in 1999 and 152 in 2000, says Jay Ritter, professor of finance at the University of Florida. And unlike 1999 and 2000, when many dot-coms didn’t even have revenue, all the Internet companies that went public this year do, Renaissance’s Paul Bard says.

But while the latest crop of Internet stocks may not crash, investors still may be disappointed, Ritter says. When investors pay such rich prices, even if the companies succeed, “with such high valuations, the possibility of a big upside just isn’t there,” he says.

Web Hosting India : Broadband: The next IT revolution in India

Written By: - Jul• 21•11

The next revolution in the IT and communications sector should be in broadband, which will help the government connect with the population and social schemes to percolate down to the intended beneficiaries, Telecom Secretary R Chandrashekhar said.

“After the telecom revolution, which helps India to reach around 850 telecom subscribers, now it’s time for a broadband revolution, which not only will help the government to reach to the poorest of the population, but will also create new jobs and will help in percolating the social schemes of the government to the ‘last door’,” Chandrashekhar said in a broadband function organised by CMAI.

According to telecom regulator TRAI, the present data on the number of broadband subscribers only indicates individual connections, without throwing any light on the actual number of users accessing the broadband services or the usage pattern, as well as the hindrances and barriers to adoption and usage of broadband.

Broadband growth has not only been slow, but is also biased in favour of urban areas. More than 60 per cent of broadband subscribers live in the top ten metros and tier-I cities, while more than 75 per cent of the connections are in the top 30 cities.

Supporting the cause, the Advisor to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovation, Sam Pitroda, also said, “The next phase is all about broadband, connectivity, utilisation and innovation on this front.”

Further, Pitroda added that broadband services can add 1 or 2 per cent to the growth of the GDP and have the potential to enhance the quality of life though its social applications.

The penetration of the internet and broadband has remained low in the country, mainly due to the limited spread of wireline telephones and non-availability, so far, of broadband technologies.

The number of broadband subscribers at the end of March, 2005, stood at 0.18 million and it increased to 12.12 million at the end of May, 2011, TRAI data reveals.

There is an urgent need for a nationwide broadband network to connect education, healthcare, banking and other services infrastructure to the entire population, thereby realising the objective of inclusive growth.

“This sector not only provides ample opportunity, but also throws up the challenge to implement this in order to reach the people who really want this (broadband services), which can help the government to reach to them,” Minister of State (MoS) for IT and Communications Milind Deora, who is in charge of telecom, said.

Even the MoS for IT and Communications Sachin Pilot, who is in charge of IT and the Postal Department, said, “Government is aware of the importance and the reach of the broadband services and we (government) are doing our part in order to bring a broadband policy in place so that it can be used to change the lives of many people.”

Web Hosting News :BSNL launches voice, video telephony services over internet

Written By: - Jul• 19•11

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in association with information and communications technology firm Sai InfoSystem (India) Ltd, on Monday launched its voice and video telephony services over the internet.

BSNL’s voice and video over internet protocol (VVOIP) technology uses the packet switching technology and makes communication possible over internet protocol (IP) networks.

“Through this service, any customer can make audio and video calls at will on any landline, mobile or internet protocol phone anywhere in the world (except India), provided both the ends have requisite video phone equipment,” the company said in a statement.

“Within India, a customer can make only IP to IP calling within BSNL network,” it added.

The service will cost 40 paise per minute for audio calls and Rs.2 per minute for video calls within the country.

International calls charges to the US will be Rs.1.20 per minute, to Britain Rs.1.20 on landline, and Rs.7.20 to mobile and Rs.1.20 per minute to China.

Monthly charges for the services will be Rs.150.

“This mode of communication is highly affordable compared to conventional video conferencing services. It will drastically reduce the cost of communication and enhance the quality of today’s communication,” said R.K. Upadhyay, chairman and managing director, BSNL .

“We are also making arrangements with leading international carriers to ensure that consumers always reach their international destinations easily and at most affordable rates,” he added.

The service is accompanied by authentication schemes and built in encryption to maintain the privacy and secrecy of the communication.

Offer to protect trademark from .xxx domain

Written By: - Jul• 17•11

Businesses wanting to prevent their trademarks from being used on the new .xxx internet domain will be offered the chance to pay $200 to $300 for a blocking service from September.

A new internet domain name, .xxx is set to launch later this year as a place to locate adult entertainment on the internet. However, the creation of the new internet domain, which joins the ubiquitous .com and .net, has been highly controversial and raised concerns that cybersquatters could register existing business names on the domain – such as ft.xxx – causing companies embarrassment and reputational damage.

ICM Registry, the company that will run the .xxx domain, is hoping to allay these concerns by allowing trademark owners to permanently exclude their names from the internet’s new red-light district for a one-off fee.

Although the payment will represent yet another charge for businesses looking to protect their internet identity, it will be cheaper than the current cost of protection. Businesses often face thousands of pounds in legal fees reclaiming internet names that have been snapped up by opportunists on .com, .net and similar top level domains. Companies such as Microsoft, Google and Apple have in the past faced lengthy battles to secure internet names for their trademarked products and services.

Stuart Lawley, chief executive, said ICM Registry would not be making any profit from the blocking fees, but merely be recovering the costs it would face in checking trademark owners’ credentials.

“We are trying to show that .xxx is a responsible internet domain,” Mr Lawley said. “The triple-x domain has sensitivities so we have gone out of our way to provide protection for companies.”

If the .xxx blocking service works it could serve as a model for the hundreds of other new internet top level domains which are due to be created next year. From next year, organisations will be able to create their own top level domain names, such as .london, or .coca-cola, a move that has reignited fears about cybersquatting.

In addition to the blocking service, ICM has signed an $8m deal with McAfee, the IT security company, to have sites on the domain scanned daily for viruses, and will monitor for under-age content.

“There is a perception that adult sites have a greater degree of [malicious software] on them. We want to assure people that is not the case,” Mr Lawley said.

Mr Lawley has had to wage an 11-year battle to get approval for the .xxx domain, including a $6m lawsuit, which it finally won last year. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann), the body that runs the directory of the world’s internet names, approved the creation of .xxx in March, to the dismay of many governments and corporations.

ICM said it had already received nearly 900,000 expressions of interest for reserving .xxx names.

Companies can register to block names from September 7 until October 28.
