EMC and Cisco Team Up for Cloud-Focused Educational Program

Networking vendor Cisco announced on Monday that it will offer a new series of educational courses on cloud architecture, virtualization, storage, data center networking and data science through a partnership with EMC.

This announcement comes less than a week after Dell launched its new partner certifications for cloud builder, provider and broker partners that offer solutions based on Dell technology.

Cisco and VMware have offered individual certifications in the past, but this is the first joint, co-branded education offering from the partners.

There are several available certifications for web hosting professionals, and this new program offers another option for web hosts looking to certify their employees. Recently, the WHIR looked at a few of the certifications available (including Cisco) and talked about the value of certifications for web hosting providers.

The ecosystem-focused courses will include material from VMware, and will be delivered in “learning paths” so managers can prescribe the specific course of training required for proficiency in each discipline, according to the press release. For example, a systems administrator learning path includes courses on cloud infrastructure and VMware vSphere, while the data center network architect learning path offers different, tailored courses to that discipline.

The joint offering appears to emphasize skills required for new job roles in IT as influenced by data growth and new cloud technologies, and the “path” delivery model moves away from the “siloed” approach where engineers are trained on networking, or storage explicitly without an understanding of how they converge into architectural plays, according to a report by CRN.

“Today’s data center is composed of heterogeneous technologies, with the cloud blurring the lines between technology silos. IT organizations must cultivate new cloud architecture skills, understand how to use big data and maintain deep domain expertise with a renewed understanding of virtualization and technology convergence,” Jeanne Beliveau-Dunn, vice president and general manager of Learning@Cisco, Cisco’s certification and education arm, said in a statement. “With this offering Cisco and EMC are leading the way in transforming skills for the next generation of IT professionals.”

Offered in bundles divided by learning paths, the courses are also available “a la carte” and can be purchased individually, though the bundles offer more value, according to the press release. The bundles start at about $10,000.

Courses will be delivered as instructor-led training by Cisco and EMC, and select courses will be available for onsite infrastructure. Some EMC courseware is available through its video instructor-led training.
